Whether you live near a coast or the headwaters of the Colorado River\, cleaning up your community will help reach our goal to remove one million pounds of plastic from our interconnected One World Ocean by 2025! \n\n\n\nMillions of seabirds and marine organisms die after mistakenly ingesting plastic debris in and near the ocean. The good news is that recovering even a few pieces of plastic debris can help save the life of an eagle\, a penguin\, or a dolphin. Cleaning up more can help save an albatross\, a turtle\, a sea bass or a whale\, and many other species.

SUMMARY:Oregon Ocean Day Celebration Beach Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer Oregon Beach Cleanups\n \nOregon Oceans Day – June 12th 2021 \nSeeking leads to host beach cleanups with Ocean Blue. \nSign-Up \n\nBeach cleanups are vital to protecting marine ecosystems because they remove plastic debris before it has the chance to wash out to sea and harm wildlife. As a beach cleanup volunteer\, you’re contributing to the sustainability of our planet. \nWhat You’ll Need \nHow do you organize a community clean up & what you’ll need \n\nTrash and recycling bags\nGloves\nHand sanitizer\nDrinking water reusable bottle)\nReef safe Sunblock or sunscreen \n\nWhat to Pick Up\n\nLitter and Debris\n\nEven small bits — animals can mistake them for food \n\nRecyclables \n\nGlass\, aluminum cans\, tin cans\, plastic drinking bottles\, etc. \n\nTrash\n\nMetals\, styrofoam\, foil wrappers\, cloth\, food waste\, etc. \n\nMicroplastics \n\nSmall bits of plastic and plastic beads\, in all shapes and colors.  \n\nAnything You Bring\nGloves\, cleaning supplies\, etc. — leave no trace\n\nCleanup Best Practices \n\nSplit recyclables and trash into separate bags\nTie trash bags and dispose in dumpsters (beware overflowing bins: they can cause items to fly away and end up back in the water)\nDon’t pick up weapons or anything that looks like it came from a hospital. Mark questionable items and inform your organizer or the lifeguard. \nIf it occurs naturally in nature — like kelp\, shells\, driftwood — leave it be (try not disrupt animals and plants in the area)\nKnow your cleanup zone boundaries and meeting times \nTake note of the nearest lifeguard station and know what to do in case of an emergency\n\nVolunteer With a Friend!\nTrying to convince a friend to join you in a cleanup? Here are a few reasons why we should all care about the health of our waters: \n\nThe ocean provides over 70% of the oxygen we breathe\nRivers and oceans are important sources of food\nSeaweed is an ingredient in many consumer products and captures carbon from our atmosphere a a\nScientists use marine organisms for lifesaving medicines \n\nIf we keep our waters healthy\, we can keep our livelihoods and economies thriving\, protect wildlife\, enjoy water recreation\, and build a brighter future for generations to come. \nWhy Pick Up Plastics and Microplastics?\nMicroplastics occur when the sun breaks down plastic debris into smaller and smaller fragments that never fully biodegrade.  \nAnimals often mistake plastics and microplastics for food and can get entangled\, injured\, gravely sick\, or wash ashore. When animals that ingest — but can’t digest — these microplastics are eaten\, the plastic moves up the food chain\, potentially into our food.  \nLook Out for Wildlife\nAs you explore the cleanup zone\, enjoy the nature around you\, but try not to disrupt the animals and plants. They’re enjoying a beach day too! If you find an injured animal\, contact your nearest wildlife agency \nLincoln City Summer Beach Cleanup with Ocean Blue Project. \nBeach cleanups are vital to protecting marine ecosystems because they remove plastic debris before it has the chance to wash out to sea and harm wildlife.
