Plastic pollution does not begin in the ocean.
It begins on land — on streets, in storm drains, and in rivers.

Ocean Blue Project’s River-to-Ocean Cleanup Model focuses on intercepting plastic upstream before it reaches coastal ecosystems and marine life.

By protecting rivers, we protect the ocean.

Why Rivers Matter in Ocean Pollution

Scientific studies show that a significant portion of ocean plastic travels through rivers before entering coastal waters.

When litter enters:

Street → Storm Drain → Creek → River → Bay → Ocean

It becomes increasingly difficult and expensive to remove.

That’s why our strategy focuses on early interception and upstream removal.

Our River-to-Ocean Strategy

Upstream River Cleanups

We organize river cleanup volunteer programs in freshwater environments where plastic begins its journey.

(Each of these should link to full state landing pages.)

Coastal Interception

Not all plastic is caught upstream.
We also conduct:

Beach cleanups
• Shoreline restoration
• Estuary cleanups
• Storm response debris removal

These efforts prevent re-circulation into open ocean currents.

Research & Innovation

Ocean Blue Project also explores long-term solutions.

Our plastic-eating fungi research investigates how certain fungal species interact with plastic materials in freshwater environments.

Impact Across the Watershed

Through coordinated efforts, Ocean Blue Project has:

• Mobilized volunteers across multiple states
• Removed thousands of pounds of plastic debris
• Partnered with corporate and university teams
• Focused efforts in high-impact river corridors

Plastic does not respect boundaries.
What enters a river in Washington, D.C. can travel to the Chesapeake Bay and eventually the Atlantic Ocean.

Protecting waterways at every stage of that journey is critical to marine conservation.

Our River-to-Ocean model creates a comprehensive approach that combines:

• Prevention
• Removal
• Education
Research
• Community engagement
