Support a Major Ocean Plastic Cleanup Mission on One of the Most Remote and Polluted Shorelines in the Pacific

Kamilo Beach on Hawaiʻi’s Big Island is known around the world for the massive amount of plastic pollution that washes onto its remote shoreline.

Ocean Blue Project has researched and assessed this coastline and confirmed what the world fears: plastic continues to arrive here in heavy volumes, carried by ocean currents from across the Pacific.

Now we are preparing for a major cleanup mission.

Our goal is to raise $300,000 to send trained crew, equipment, and support teams to begin removing plastic and marine debris from this remote beach as it washes in.

Why Kamilo Beach Needs Immediate Help

Kamilo Beach, sometimes called “Plastic Beach,” is one of the most heavily impacted marine debris accumulation zones in Hawaiʻi.

Plastic bottles, broken fragments, fishing rope, nets, and microplastics wash ashore here again and again. Because of the area’s location, ocean currents and wave action continue to trap debris along the coastline.

This is not a one-time pollution event.

This is an ongoing plastic invasion.

Without cleanup action, plastic continues to build up, break apart, and threaten marine ecosystems.

Why This Cleanup Is So Difficult

Kamilo Beach is not an easy beach cleanup.

This shoreline is:

  • Remote
  • Hard to access
  • Expensive to operate in
  • Logistically challenging for equipment and waste removal

To clean this area responsibly, Ocean Blue Project needs:

  • Trained cleanup crew
  • Transportation and field logistics
  • Cleanup gear and support equipment
  • Debris extraction and hauling capacity
  • Disposal coordination for removed waste

This is why the project requires $800,000 in funding.

What Your Donation Supports

Your gift helps Ocean Blue Project take real action on one of the Pacific’s most difficult plastic pollution sites.

Funding supports:

  • Deployment of cleanup crews
  • Removal of plastic, rope, nets, and marine debris
  • Transportation and hauling logistics
  • Safety equipment and field operations
  • Ongoing assessment of debris accumulation
  • Mission support in a remote coastal environment

Every donation moves this project closer to launch.

The Mission

Ocean Blue Project’s goal is simple:

Remove plastic from Kamilo Beach before even more of it breaks down into microplastics or harms wildlife.

This project is part of a larger mission to stop plastic pollution where it accumulates most — from rivers and coastlines to remote marine debris hotspots.

Kamilo Beach is one of the places where the world can clearly see the scale of the plastic pollution crisis.

With your help, it can also become a place where people see action.

Why Donate to Ocean Blue Project

Ocean Blue Project is a nonprofit built on direct action.

From volunteer cleanups to large-scale debris removal projects, our teams work to remove plastic pollution before it causes greater harm to marine life and coastal ecosystems.

We do more than raise awareness.

We remove plastic.

Ocean Blue Project impact includes:

  • Over 2 million pounds of plastic pollution removed
  • Volunteer cleanups across coastlines and waterways
  • Large-scale removal projects in heavily impacted areas
  • Hands-on action to protect wildlife and water

When you support this mission, you support real cleanup work.

Urgency Section

Plastic Keeps Washing In. We Need to Act.

Every day this shoreline remains unaddressed, more debris arrives.

Plastic does not stop on its own.

It breaks apart.

It spreads.

It harms wildlife.

It becomes harder to remove.

Your donation helps Ocean Blue Project respond with action.

Closing Section

Every Piece Removed Protects a Life

Kamilo Beach represents one of the clearest signs of our global plastic crisis — but it can also become a symbol of what direct action looks like.
